Yes....Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all ages, it's time for the Phoenix Pharaoh's FIRST comic book review of the new 52 Line from DC Comics. In case you're not familar with it, essentially what it is, well, is another damn reboot to be frank. Is that good or bad? I'll let you be the judge of that. I've got my own opinions on it. So let's get started!
Superboy # 1
From the beginning of this read I really enjoyed that it was Superboy's perspective and in regards to the situations, things, and people around him. What I also liked was that he hated the name "Superboy" as much as I do. Who in the hell would be happy to be named Superboy? Superman, of course. But not Superboy. That's just stupid. But whatever. Anyhow, in this issue it shows that Superboy is a clone with half of Superman's DNA and an anoymous other donator. They indirectly hint at Lex being that donator so I'm going to just assume. The only thing I was confused by was whether this is the ORIGINAL Superboy from the Reign of Superman aka Conner or whether it was that other Kryptonian guy that was filling in for Superman while he was banned from Metropolis. Aside from that it was an entertaining read. I must say I'm enjoying his attitude in terms of how he sees things. In addition, he is really really powerful as you'll see when you read the issue. He basically says that even though his eyes were closed while they had him in one of the STAR labs he was smart enough to actually learn alot of human-like behavior just from hearing them in the lab. That is pretty impressive. So for me, this one gets 4 out 5 stars.
Action Comics #1
Where do I begin? I just didn't get it. I was completely lost. I read the whole thing trying to figure out what all the things that were happening were happening and also why Superman was running around in a damn Superman t-shirt with jeans and a cape on. This was a complete waste of time and energy. If this is a sign of anything to come I won't even be looking in that direction of the DCU anymore. I'm so damn disappointed in this one. I was hoping it would be all it was hyped up to be. This gets 2 stars ouf ot 5. You're welcome, DC.
Batgirl #1
Now from the beginning I've always liked Barbara Gordon's character and while I thought it made more since to have her evolve and flourish as Oracle, apparently DC thought otherwise by making her become Batgirl once more, which honestly to me, seems like a downgrade. So I read into this and she states that it's been 3 years since she was crippled by the bullet the Joker shot out of his gun. Right there doesn't make any kind of sense to me. So she is staying with Commissioner Gordon but it in the process of moving out. She fights some crime as Batgirl and actually seemed to be getting back into the swing of things until she started having flashbacks of the Joker pointing his gun at her before firing it. One of these momentary flashbacks actually results in someone getting killed due to her lack of attention. I was actually embarassed for her. While I do love Babs as a female character I just do not think she NEEDS to be Batgirl anymore. She's a grown ass women last I checked. She build this identity for herself as Oracle and then DC decides to shit all over it and make her Batgirl AGAIN. Newsflash, she's not a GIRL anymore she's a WOMAN. Finally, no mention of ANYTHING past this issue such as former Batgirls, etc. So don't look for much history leading up to the events in the first issue. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars and that is only because Babs is one of my all time favorite female characters.
Batwing #1
All I have to say is...seriously!? While I am black and do enjoy seeing black heroes most of the time, like me, this is an exception to the rule. Batwing is so damn stupid. This guy is over in Africa and gets some armor from Batman who seems to be training him. I don't get why DC would think abut getting a guy like this in armor to call himself Batwing. I know for a fact there are animals in Africa that are far more scary than Bats. That's in and of itself. The only thing is I don't care about Africa. The art was really nicely drawn. Even still, this gets a 2 of 5. This whole book needs to be cancelled. Period.
